Customized Medications to Support the Healing Process

At Fairway Lackner Pharmacy, we work closely with physicians to prepare customized topical wound care compounds. These medications are designed to enhance the body’s natural healing process and support patients with chronic, post-surgical, or hard-to-heal wounds.

The Wound Healing Process

Wound healing is a complex biological process that restores damaged tissue and cellular structures. It involves a series of overlapping phases that work together to repair the skin.

The wound healing process can be divided into three key phases:

  • Inflammatory Phase – Immune cells remove damaged tissue and fight infection.
  • Proliferative Phase – Collagen is produced and new tissue begins to form.
  • Remodeling Phase – Collagen is reorganized and scar tissue strengthens.

During these phases, several important biological events take place, including chemotaxis, phagocytosis, neocollagenesis, collagen degradation and remodeling, angiogenesis, epithelization, and the production of glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) and proteoglycans. Together, these processes help replace damaged skin with new tissue and fibroblastic-mediated scar formation.

Common Compounded Ingredients for Wound Care

Our pharmacy can prepare a variety of topical compounded medications designed to support wound healing. These ingredients can be used individually or in combination, depending on the needs of each patient.

  • Phenytoin – Promotes tissue regeneration
  • Misoprostol – Reduces inflammation and aids cell repair
  • Metronidazole – Helps prevent infection
  • Nifedipine – Improves blood flow to the wound area

The literature tends to show positive outcomes with the use of these products with little to no side effects.
